The Art of the Home Bar: Stocking a Luxury Bar Cart
A well-stocked home bar is a statement of style and hospitality. It means you are always ready to welcome guests, mix a classic cocktail or pour a special dram. Here is how to build one that looks as good as it performs.
The essential spirits
Start with the foundations that cover the majority of classic cocktails:
Gin – a classic London Dry for Martinis and G&Ts.
Vodka – a clean, premium vodka for Martinis and long drinks.
Whisky – a versatile blended Scotch or bourbon for mixing, plus a single malt for sipping.
Rum – a quality aged rum for sipping and an Old Fashioned twist.
Tequila – a 100% agave blanco for Margaritas and Palomas.
Cognac – a VSOP for Sidecars and after-dinner sipping.
Liqueurs and modifiers
These unlock dozens of classic recipes:
Sweet and dry vermouth (keep opened bottles in the fridge).
An orange liqueur such as triple sec.
A bitter Italian aperitivo for Negronis and Spritzes.
Aromatic and orange bitters.
Mixers
Premium tonic, soda water, ginger ale and ginger beer make a noticeable difference. Buy small bottles so they stay fizzy.
The tools
A cocktail shaker and a mixing glass.
A bar spoon, jigger and strainer.
A citrus press and a sharp paring knife.
Quality, clear ice, which is often overlooked but transforms every drink.
Glassware
Rocks glasses for Old Fashioneds and spirits on ice.
Highball glasses for long drinks.
Coupes or Nick & Nora glasses for stirred and shaken cocktails.
Tulip glasses for nosing whisky and Cognac.
Presentation
Display your best bottles front and centre, keep the cart uncluttered and add a few finishing touches: a small tray of citrus, a bowl of olives and fresh herbs. A luxury bar cart should look curated, not crowded.
Make it personal
Include one or two bottles that tell a story, such as a whisky from a trip or a rare release you are saving for the right moment. These become the conversation starters.
