How to Host an Unforgettable Champagne Reception

Few things set the tone for a celebration quite like a Champagne reception. Whether it is a wedding, a product launch or a private party, getting the details right turns a pleasant welcome into a memorable moment.

How much Champagne do you need?

A standard 75cl bottle pours around six glasses. As a guide:

  • For a one-hour reception – allow two to three glasses per guest.

  • For a toast only – one glass per guest is enough, so one bottle serves six.

  • For a longer drinks party – plan for around half a bottle per guest.

Always order a little extra. Running out is far worse than having a few bottles left over, and unopened Champagne keeps well.

Consider larger formats

Magnums (equivalent to two bottles) make a striking centrepiece and are widely believed to age more gracefully thanks to the smaller ratio of air to wine. For a truly theatrical moment, Jeroboams and larger formats are unforgettable.

Serve it at the right temperature

Champagne is best served between 8 and 10°C. Chill bottles in an ice bucket filled with a mixture of ice and water for around 20 to 30 minutes. Ice alone is far less efficient than ice and water.

Choose the right glass

Flutes preserve bubbles and look elegant for receptions. Many professionals now prefer a tulip or white wine glass, which allows aromas to open up. For a vintage or prestige cuvée, a wider glass is worth it.

Opening and pouring like a professional

  • Remove the foil and loosen the cage, keeping a thumb on the cork.

  • Hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle and turn the bottle, not the cork.

  • Ease the cork out gently. The aim is a soft sigh, not a loud pop.

  • Pour a small amount first, let the mousse settle, then top up to two-thirds.

Canapé pairings

Champagne is remarkably food friendly. Try:

  • Oysters, smoked salmon blinis or crab tartlets.

  • Parmesan crisps and gougères.

  • Fried and salty bites, which pair beautifully with Champagne's acidity.
